<p>Applescript is a unique feature of Mac OS X that&#8217;s easy enough for average users, but still flexible enough to appeal to power users.  I have a few small applescripts I use almost daily.</p>
<p>The first thing I used Applescript for was to automatically position windows.  I&#8217;m particular about my window placement and it&#8217;s nice to be able to set them up once and then automate it from then on.  The only thing tricky about it is determining the numbers to use as you set the position as the number of pixels from the upper left corner of your screen.</p>
<p>Here is a very basic script to set the position and size of a Safari window:</p>

set the bounds of the first window to {140, 0, 1160, 775}<br />

<p>That&#8217;s it!  To see that script in action, just launch the Script Editor application inside the Applescript folder inside the Applications folder.  Copy and paste the code into a new editor window and push the green &#8216;Run&#8217; button.  The numbers in the script are the x and y coordinates for the upper left corner of the window followed by the lower right.  The upper left corner of the screen is {0,0}.  Play around with the numbers and see what happens.  You can also change the &#8216;Safari&#8217; to the name of another application.</p>
<p>For a little more fun, here&#8217;s another version of the script that works on two windows:</p>

<p>The &#8216;try&#8217; part is in there so the script doesn&#8217;t spit out an error message if you only have one Safari window open.  When you have a script you like you should save it as either a script for use in the script menu or an application that will work on its own like any other.  I usually save them as standalone applications so I have more flexibility in how I use them.</p>

			<div class="entry-content alignfull wp-block-post-content has-medium-font-size has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-post-content-is-layout-constrained"><p>Even if you have a 19&#8243;monitor (or, if you are especially lucky, <em>two</em> 19&#8243;monitors), one of the pitfalls of Mac OS X is that it&#8217;s not uncommon to find yourself having numerous windows cluttering up your screen. With Mac OS X being pretty rock solid these days and Macs coming with more and more memory, the trend of having many windows and documents open for days and weeks on end is unlikely to reverse any time soon.</p>
<p>The resulting loss of screen real estate can be distracting, causing a loss of productivity as you are forced to repeatedly search for a given window in a sea of white.</p>

			<div class="entry-content alignfull wp-block-post-content has-medium-font-size has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-post-content-is-layout-constrained"><p>Mac OS X&#8217;s keyboard shortcuts are a lot more standardized than those of a certain other OS many people use, but you may still find yourself wishing you could change one or two.  Wish no more!  It&#8217;s easy to do just that.  </p>
<p>To set a custom keyboard shortcut, just open up the System Preferences and switch to the Keyboard and Mouse preferences.</p>

<p>Choose the Application you want to change the shortcut for from the list.  I chose Camino so I could change the shortcuts to switch browser tabs so they match Safari.</p>
<p>Enter in the exact menu item you want to change.  I entered in &#8216;Previous Tab&#8217;.</p>
<p>Then click in the Keyboard Shortcut field and hit the shortcut you want to use.  That&#8217;s it!  You may have to also relaunch the application afterwards.</p>
<p>Using this method I set iTerm (a tabbed Terminal application) and Camino to have the same &#8216;switch tabs&#8217; shortcuts as Safari so my computing life would be more harmonious.  Mission accomplished!</p>

The quantity of software is not nearly as large as it is for Windows but the overall quality is usually the best of what you&#8217;ll find for Windows.  Even better is that some of the best Mac software is also free!  Here&#8217;s a few of our favorites&#8230;</p>
<p><img data-recalc-dims="1" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.ithug.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/adium_smaller.png?ssl=1" alt='Adium' align='left' /> <a href="http://www.adiumx.com/">Adium</a> is a multi-protocol instant messaging (IM) application.  It handles pretty much everything including AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, Jabber, and GTalk.  It started life as AIM-only and that&#8217;s where the name came from.  It features some great Mac integration like syncing contact icons/pictures and it has plenty of features while still being easy to use.  It&#8217;s not as simple as iChat but Adium is far better for basic text IM.  Adium does not handle audio or voice chat, however.  Adium is open-source and completely free.</p>

It wasn&#8217;t a special event or any sort of demonstration.  It was somebody in front of me in a crowd at a music event pretty near Cupertino using it to send SMS messages back and forth with somebody.   I first noticed a pretty high resolution touch screen device and, being the snoopy nerd I am, I craned my neck to get a peek.  I didn&#8217;t recognize the software so I was pretty sure it wasn&#8217;t a Palm Treo.  I assumed it was probably Windows Mobile until I noticed there was a familiar looking on-screen keyboard and little talk bubbles very similar to iChat.</p>
<p>Everyone who follows Mac news at all knows the iPhone is not yet out and it won&#8217;t be coming out until the end of June, so I thought it might be a fake.  I kept watching the person (standing right in front of me!) to get more clues.  The device was being kept in one of those iPod socks, and after watching for awhile it became clear that it was indeed the same interface I had seen at the Macworld demonstration.  I saw a brief glimpse of the main screen full of icons (pictured here), but it was very fast.  I do think the oddly missing icon on the lower right was not missing but I can&#8217;t be certain.  The animated interface was very quick and fluid from what I saw.</p>
<p>The room was dark (it was a nighttime event) and the person using the iPhone was being somewhat discrete but not especially so.  I didn&#8217;t see any applications other than the SMS iChat look-alike.  I did see a numeric code screen used to unlock the screen once, but that&#8217;s not especially exciting.  It was a 4 or so digit code.  The finger slide lock/unlock from the iPhone originally demoed was also there and I have to assume the numeric lock was there for security reasons on this pre-release device.</p>
<p>It makes sense that some sort of field testing might be necessary for a device like this but I haven&#8217;t heard of any similar reports. </p>
<p>I have no pictures to back up my story, unfortunately.</p>

<p>Any Windows user knows when he/she opens a folder they can always tell where they are by looking at the Address Bar.  The Finder on a Mac only shows the name of the folder you&#8217;re looking at.  To see the full &#8220;path&#8221; hold down Command (the Apple key) and click on the folder name.</p>
<p>Another handy tip: move the mouse down to one of the folders in the path, let go of the button &#8211; and that folder will open.</p>

Here&#8217;s a few keyboard shortcuts to save you some time while using the Finder.  Remember that cmd is short for &#8216;command&#8217; which is the real name for the &#8216;Apple&#8217; key.</p>

			<div class="entry-content alignfull wp-block-post-content has-medium-font-size has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-post-content-is-layout-constrained"><p>I had long been planning to buy a Mac mini to hook up to my TV and stereo replacing the DVD player and adding media center functionality, and I finally did just that. </p>

<p>  Last night I connected the mini&#8217;s DVI output to my plasma&#8217;s HDMI input and the digital audio output to my AV receiver.  The short version of the story is that it pretty much just worked but with a few unresolved issues and some minor hiccups along the way.<br />
 As you can see in this poor picture of the Mac mini in my stereo cabinet along with the HD cable/DVR box, the mini is quite small.  The 5 year old DVD player it is replacing filled the entire bottom shelf area.  I hooked it up to the tv, the stereo, power, and an extra keyboard and mouse and, with much excitement, flipped the whole setup on!  </p>

Each press of tab will then jump to running applications.  Release command to switch to that application.  </p>
<p>Simply pressing and releasing command-tab will switch to the most recently used application.  Using the shortcut repeatedly will switch back and forth between the last two applications used.</p>
