<p>It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden and tragic passing of Al (Aldege) Giroux on March 16, 2023, in Daytona Beach, Florida. Al was a beloved figure in the community and will be greatly missed. He leaves behind his life-long soulmate Susan, his daughter Chantal, and son Jeremy (Melanie). Al had a special bond with his cherished grandchildren, Ella, Griffin, and Sophia, and they will always treasure the memories they shared with their Grandpa.</p>

<div id="readmore-1" class="read-more-content" style="display: none; margin-top: 0.5em;"></strong>Al was a former Executive Board member of the Sudbury Manitoulin Children's Foundation, a role he held with dedication and passion. He believed in the importance of supporting children and was actively involved in the foundation's Send-A-Kid-To-Camp Program. Al's commitment to improving the lives of children in the community was truly admirable.</p>
<p>Throughout his life, Al achieved remarkable professional milestones. After graduating from the University of Windsor in 1973, he began his career as a Professional Engineer at Alcan in British Columbia. He later returned to Sudbury, where he worked at Glencore (Falconbridge Nickel Mines) in various roles and job sites. Al's proudest time was serving as the General Manager and V.P. Of Operations at Falconbridge's Raglan site in northern Quebec. Under his leadership, Raglan Mine earned the prestigious "Canadian Safest Mine Award."</p>
<p>Al's thirst for knowledge led him to earn a Masters in Engineering, a Diploma in Metallurgical Engineering, and an MBA. Even after retirement, he generously shared his expertise as a consultant for numerous companies nationally and internationally.</p>
<p>When he wasn't working, Al found joy in spending time with his snow machine buddies, exploring the trails together. He was also an active member of ATV clubs in the Nipissing and Sudbury areas. Traveling was another passion Al shared with his beloved wife, Susan. They embarked on numerous adventures, visiting destinations such as Europe, Japan, Hawaii, and enjoying Mediterranean and Caribbean cruises. Daytona Beach held a special place in their hearts, as they frequented the Daytona 500 and had their "special" seats reserved at the track.</p>
<p>Al's legacy will forever be marked by his dedication to his family, his kindness, and humble attitude. He was a loyal friend, always ready to lend a hand and tackle even the most challenging obstacles. His remarkable problem-solving skills earned him the nickname "Al the original tool man." Al will be remembered as a true hero, and his memory will remain eternally cherished in the hearts of all who knew him.</p>

<p>There are many <strong>children </strong>in the Sudbury-Manitoulin area that could benefit from an outdoor experience each and every year.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Children need positive experiences for self-growth.</span></p>
<p>The <strong>mission</strong> of the <span style="color: #808080;">Sudbury</span> Manitoulin Children's Foundation is to provide programs and services that benefit children, youth and families requiring our assistance.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While much of the world has stopped, our mission of providing programs and services that benefit children and youth will not be placed on pause. To our supporters ~ Thank you for reaching out with compassion to help those who are most vulnerable, making this a better world for everyone. </span><b>Because you care, 300 children in 2020, </b><span style="font-weight: 400;">were given the opportunity to create their own wonderful summer camp memories despite the stifling restrictions of this pandemic.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The "Send-A-Kid To Camp" (SAKTC) Program offers children with financial barriers, social, emotional, or behavioral needs the opportunity to socialize with their peer group in a safe and structured but relaxed environment. It provides those with home-based troubles the perfect opportunity to take a break from their daily struggles and to gain much-needed self-confidence and perspective. Camps present opportunities to explore nature, build campfires, swim, sail, rope climb, or just read a book in the shade of a tree. Camp builds self-esteem and confidence in children. They learn to step outside their comfort zones during times like skit days, and that they can do things on their own, giving them a chance to be independent. For many of our campers, their trip to camp will be the only positive thing they will experience that summer. The "Send-A-Kid To Camp Program is designed to encompass the entire camping experience by covering all camp fees, assisting with transportation to and from camp, and providing basic necessities and sleeping bags for children who may need them. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The PLAY (Positive Leisure Activities for Youth) Program offers children the opportunity to participate in organized sports and recreational activities, by removing financial barriers. This program equips kids for life as participation in organized sport and recreation increases a child's chance for success in life. The children's lives are enriched through being able to discover, participate, gain self-confidence, develop self-esteem, and learn leadership skills. This is the power of PLAY. <p>Over the years it has become clear that - although child abuse prevention is an important component of assisting high-risk children - education is the key to breaking the generational cycle of abuse, unemployment and welfare dependency that plagues these children. Without family support, youth must support themselves and pay for their education through part-time work and student loans. Some of these youth find the financial burden of school too daunting and do not proceed with their dreams. Bursaries would help alleviate some of the financial burden and encourage them to continue their education.</p>
